Large breed dogs — Labradors, German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, Rottweilers, Great Danes, Malinois, Bernese Mountain Dogs, and similar — face different health challenges to small breeds. Their size creates unique mechanical stress on joints, their growth phase carries specific nutritional risks if done incorrectly, and they are statistically at higher risk of several serious conditions that diet can influence.
This guide is specifically for large breeds over 25kg in adult weight. If you have a giant breed (over 40–45kg adult weight — Great Danes, Mastiffs, Irish Wolfhounds), the considerations are different again and we flag those specifically.

WHAT LARGE BREED DOGS ACTUALLY NEED
- Controlled calcium & phosphorus for puppies (critical) — Excess calcium during growth causes developmental orthopaedic disease (DOD). Large breed puppies need 2.5–4.5g calcium per 1,000 kcal. Use ONLY foods specifically labelled ‘large breed puppy’ or ‘all life stages, including large breed puppies.’ Do NOT supplement calcium in large breed puppies.
- Joint health nutrients — Glucosamine (500–1000mg/day), Chondroitin (400–800mg/day), and EPA/DHA omega-3s are the most evidence-based joint support nutrients.
- Calorie density & weight management — Obesity is the most common preventable disease in large breed dogs. Every 1kg of excess weight creates 4kg of additional mechanical force on joints.
- Larger kibble size — Large breeds should chew their food — kibble sized for 25kg+ dogs encourages chewing rather than swallowing whole, improving dental cleaning and reducing bloat risk.

BREEDS TO WATCH: SPECIFIC LARGE BREED CONCERNS
Labrador Retrievers: Genetically predisposed to obesity AND to a specific mutation in the POMC gene that controls appetite signalling — many Labs literally cannot feel full. Calorie control is critical. Measure food, no free-feeding.
Golden Retrievers: Elevated DCM risk — avoid grain-free diets. Prone to cancer (highest rate of any breed). Cancer screening from age 5+ recommended.
German Shepherds: High incidence of hip and elbow dysplasia. Weight management and joint-specific nutrients especially important. Prone to EPI (exocrine pancreatic insufficiency) — if your GSD has chronic loose stools, diarrhoea, weight loss despite eating, consult vet for EPI testing.
Rottweilers: High osteosarcoma (bone cancer) rate. Maintain healthy weight. Joint health critical.
Great Danes, Mastiffs, Irish Wolfhounds (Giant Breeds): Bloat (GDV) is a life-threatening emergency. Feed 2–3 small meals per day, rest 30–60 minutes before and after eating, consider slow-feeder bowl. Some vets recommend prophylactic gastropexy surgery.
FAQ — Large Breed Dog Food Australia
Can I feed my large breed puppy regular adult dog food?
No — not recommended. Regular adult food or all-breeds puppy food typically has too-high calcium levels for large breed puppies and can cause developmental orthopaedic disease. Use only food specifically formulated for large breed puppies until 18–24 months (later for giant breeds).
Do large breed dogs need more protein?
Large breeds do not need proportionally more protein than small breeds, but they do need adequate high-quality protein. The protein quality (amino acid completeness) matters more than percentage. Aim for 22–32% DM protein from named animal sources.
When should I switch my large breed dog from puppy to adult food?
Large breeds: switch at 12–18 months when skeletal growth is approximately complete. Giant breeds (over 40kg): switch at 18–24 months. Transition over 7–10 days by gradually replacing puppy food with adult food.
Is grain-free food safe for my Golden Retriever?
Golden Retrievers are one of the breeds most associated with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in the FDA’s grain-free diet investigation. We recommend grain-inclusive food for Golden Retrievers as a precaution. Hills Science Diet, Advance, or Black Hawk with grains are all excellent choices.
