Pistachios are not acutely toxic but pose multiple risks: high fat (pancreatitis), high sodium in salted varieties (kidney stress), choking hazard from hard shells, and aflatoxin mould contamination. Not recommended for cats.

Can Cats Eat Pistachios? The Full Answer

Pistachios are not toxic to cats but unsuitable for feline consumption for multiple overlapping reasons. Pistachios are roughly 45–50% fat by weight — high enough to trigger pancreatitis in susceptible cats. Most commercial pistachios are heavily salted, with individual nuts containing 50–150mg sodium each. Cats are far more sensitive to sodium than dogs; excess salt stresses the kidneys and contributes to hypertension. A single pistachio may not exceed a cat's daily sodium budget, but regular consumption poses cumulative risk.

Pistachios are encased in hard shells, posing a significant choking hazard. Cats lack grinding molars and typically don't chew large objects before swallowing. A pistachio shell can lodge in the oesophagus or cause intestinal impaction. Additionally, pistachios are frequently contaminated with aflatoxins (fungal toxins from Aspergillus), particularly in warm, humid climates like Australia. While a single pistachio's aflatoxin load is unlikely to cause acute toxicity, regular consumption introduces cumulative risk.

Veterinarians universally recommend avoiding pistachios in cats. The combination of high fat, sodium, choking risk, and mould contamination makes them unsuitable.

Symptoms Watch For

  • Choking or gagging
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea (high fat)
  • Abdominal pain
  • Lethargy
  • Excessive thirst (sodium-related)
  • Panting (pancreatitis)

Frequently Asked Questions

Are unsalted pistachios safer?

Marginally (less sodium), but still high fat and choking hazard. Both unsafe.

Can pistachio shells break down in the digestive system?

No. Hard shells don't dissolve and can cause impaction requiring surgery.

My cat ate one pistachio — is she okay?

One unlikely to cause acute toxicity. Monitor for choking signs and pancreatitis symptoms.

Are pistachios different from other nuts?

All nuts are high fat and unsuitable. Pistachios have added sodium risk. Avoid all nuts.

Can pistachio butter be given to cats?

No. Worse than whole pistachios — concentrated fat and sodium.
