Large dog beds that actually fit — and hold their shape — under dogs over 25 kg.

Finding a large dog bed in Australia that’s genuinely large is harder than it sounds. Many products marketed as ‘large’ are too small for a Labrador lying sprawled, and cheaper foam beds compress flat under heavy dogs within weeks. We tested 6 beds specifically with large and giant breeds — Labradors, German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, Rottweilers and a Great Dane — to find the options that hold up.

⭐ Best for Giant Breeds
Snooza Big Dog Bed

Snooza Big Dog Bed

9.2
★★★★★
Pawkeen score · Independently tested
$399.90 AUD
snooza.com.au

The Big Dog Bed is the only Australian dog bed we tested that’s genuinely sized for giant breeds. At 130×100 cm, a Great Dane can sleep fully stretched. The high-density orthofoam base handles dogs over 45 kg without compressing flat, and the Chinchilla cover is machine washable. Expensive but the only credible option for breeds over 40 kg.

Pros
  • 130×100 cm — sufficient for Great Danes and similar giant breeds
  • Orthofoam rated for dogs well over 45 kg — no compression issue
  • Australian-made; Snooza’s quality benchmark
Cons
  • $399.90 is a significant price point
  • One size and colour only

For large breeds up to 40 kg, the Ultra Luxe Retreat is a premium orthofoam option that looks as good as it performs. Deep bolster walls, a plush interior and orthofoam base in Husky or Silver. Our Labrador testers settled into it within the first night. The L size at $299 is excellent value for what you get.

Pros
  • Deep bolster walls suit large dogs who rest their chin on edges
  • Orthofoam base — proper joint support for large breeds
  • Premium appearance — looks like furniture in a living room
Cons
  • Most large breeds need the L ($299) — medium size too small
  • Light-coloured fabrics show fur more visibly

What to look for – AU buying advice

📏 What Size Is Actually Large Enough?

A large dog bed should be at least 90×65 cm for a Labrador sleeping sprawled. For GSDs, 100×75 cm is better. Great Danes and Bernese Mountain Dogs need 130×100 cm minimum. Always measure your dog from nose to tail while lying down and add 25 cm on each end.

🦴 Foam Density Under Heavy Dogs

Under a 35 kg dog, low-density foam bottoms out — the dog ends up sleeping on the hard base rather than the foam. Any large breed bed should use foam rated at 200 kg/m³ (orthofoam grade) or higher. Snooza specifies this; many budget alternatives do not. Test it at the store: press your full hand weight in and check if it hits the base.

💰 Large Beds Cost More — It’s Justified

A large orthofoam bed requires significantly more material than a medium, and the foam must be denser to support the extra weight. Budget large beds cut corners on foam density, which means your 30 kg dog compresses through to the base. The $150–$400 price range for large/XL quality beds is appropriate — cheaper options rarely last more than 12 months under a big dog.

🧺 Washing a Large Dog Bed

Large dog beds produce large amounts of fur and dirt. Check that the cover comes off easily (zip-off preferred) and fits in a standard Australian front-loader washing machine. Many XL covers need a laundromat commercial machine — check dimensions before buying. Foam inserts should always be spot-cleaned and air-dried, never machine washed.

Common Questions

What size bed does a Labrador need?

A Labrador (25–36 kg) needs a bed of at least 90×65 cm (Large size). If your Lab is a sprawler, 100×75 cm is better. Choose orthofoam over fibrefill — Labradors are prone to hip dysplasia and firm foam support makes a measurable difference to joint health as they age.

What is the best dog bed for a German Shepherd?

GSDs need a large orthofoam bed with bolster sides to satisfy their anxiety-prone nature. The Snooza Ortho Snuggler or Calming Snuggler in L or XL is our top pick. For outdoors, the Snooza D1000 XL is the best option.

Are expensive dog beds worth it for large breeds?

Yes — significantly more so than for small breeds. A cheap large dog bed will compress flat under a 30+ kg dog within months, providing no support and becoming a hygiene issue. A quality orthofoam large bed (Snooza level) will last 3–5 years with proper care and provides genuine joint health benefit.

What dog bed is best for a Great Dane?

The Snooza Big Dog Bed is the only Australian bed we found adequately sized for a Great Dane at 130×100 cm. At $399 it’s a serious investment, but it’s the only option that provides adequate surface area and density for a dog that can weigh 55+ kg.
